The Legendary Anime Concludes a 27-Year Era in the Coming Year

It's the end of an iconic period for long-running series, with the production studio revealing a revised release plan for the beloved series, which has been airing for over a quarter-century and included numerous filler arcs. Commencing in the new year, after the Egghead Island arc concludes, the anime will go on a quarterly hiatus until spring, when the next major arc begins.

Updated Production Plan

Going forward, the series will release two seasons every year for a cap of two dozen installments. The studio states this will help the anime to “dive even deeper into the core of the universe — incorporating more material, rhythm, and timing of the original manga.” However, Toei conclude by hinting at “exciting surprises” during the hiatus period, which suggests more related projects, such as Netflix's live-action season 2, set to premiere in the interim.

Learning from Past Breaks

The series anime had a six-month break that began in October 2024 and ended in April 2025. The intermission was for the production team to improve the visuals and let the manga to get further ahead to avoid a rushed adaptation and lengthy recap episodes. The show couldn't benefit more from this break, and it has managed to deliver fans with numerous action sequences, superior graphics, and less filler than previously.

Embracing Seasonal Format

Although a few summary installments sprouted up during the recent run, the benefits of this new production schedule far surpass the occasional interruption in the action. This also gives the manga, which is currently in the thick of the latest arc, to gain more ground on the adaptation. According to the news, this may result in one episode of the anime adapting one chapter, with others instead covering more material or more to compensate for time.

It's the end of an era for anime, as the epic saga is the final major title to ditch the traditional method of creation, which focused on airing for almost the entire year. This explains why iconic series such as Bleach, and of course itself have numerous filler arcs, and the standard of the animation can vary widely between installments and the next. Nowadays, series creation is organized in cours, with a couple maximum coming out each year, enabling better quality and greater accuracy to the original work.
