France will start stopping migrant vessels in Channel after UK pressure
France has agreed to start stopping small boats in the Channel, after an extended period of insistence from the United Kingdom.
The change in policy comes after the British leader wrote to the President urging him to back the initiative and stating there presently "lack any effective preventive measure" in the Channel.
French security forces have been authorized to stop the small boats at sea, but only before they've collected their migrants, according to official confirmation.
French authorities have infrequently acted to prevent the overcrowded boats leaving the coastline because it is considered excessively high a risk to both officers and individuals.
"It is crucial that we implement these methods this month... We have zero effective deterrent in the Channel."
Now, a French naval police representative states personnel will begin taking action at sea, with the aim of protecting human life.
Notably, the official excluded the use of nets to stop boats, which had previously been reported as a potential method to snarl the engines of the vessels.
The decision to intervene at all is a major advancement, coming after a brief change towards a more aggressive strategy this summer, which ceased when the previous Interior Minister departed from office.
This was demonstrated in July, in the run-up to a meeting between the UK leader and President, when authorities were observed walking into the sea to slash the sides of a boat.
Currently French authorities will once more be permitted to stop boats prior to they pick up migrant passengers from the coastal areas of France's north coast, although it's uncertain how the small boats will be stopped.
Strong winds are currently postponing the commencement of intervention operations and the human trafficking networks will be looking for methods to adapt to avoid interception, as they have frequently done in the past.
UK immigration authorities and the Prime Minister's office have been approached for comment.
